Monkey Island
Legend says that during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), there was a village of Li fishermen in Lingshui County, (near Sanya). One day, the village was struck with a mysterious pestilence causing many of the villagers to go blind and forcing many families to leave their homes.
In this village was a young man named Yanan, who was known for his fishing prowess. He had heard a story about black pearls that could cure the villagers. Upon hearing of the story, he immediately ventured out in his boat to search for the pearls, but was capsized in a squal and was struggling for his life when luckily, a group of mystical monkeys were passing by on a raft, heading for an enchanted island marked by a stone likeness of a monkey...
Monkey Island is a major tourist destination for Chinese travelling to Hainan. Everyone has heard of it, and anyone who has been to Hainan has most certainly been to Monkey Island. Why it is so popular has to do with Chinese culture which has had a long reverent view of monkeys and they also find them hillarious.
If you're interested in visiting Monkey Island, your hotel staff should be able to answer any further questions and arrange all the details for the trip.
Coming into Monkey Island (actually a peninsula) you'll have to take the cable car from the main island. It is the longest cable car in China.
