Getting Around
Busses are the main form of transport. A bus from any 1 point in a city to any other point in that same city should never cost more than 1 RMB. Inter-city buses from the city of Haikou to the southern city of Sanya run approximately 75 RMB. Express busses to and from these cities generally take 3.5 hours one way.
There is no rail network on the island.
Taxi's are extremely cheap and generally even for budget travellers are the best form of in city travel. Trips across the city by taxi should cost no more than 20 RMB to opposing ends.
Tip: If travelling in Hainan, it is good to note that almost no one will speak English outside the resort areas. It is best to have the staff at your hotel write down your destination (and your way back) for you on a piece of paper before starting off in the morning.
Rental cars can be obtained in the cities of Haikou and Sanya. Required items to obtain your rental car are your passport, your arrival air tickets, drivers license and deposit by cash or by credit card. The company will drive the car to your hotel and you can rent in Sanya and return in Haikou or vice versa. Daily rental is limited to 8 hours or 300-400 Kilometers depending on the company. Prices range from USD38/day to 1250/day depending on the make.
