The capital of Hainan Island is Haiku. The Li, were the original inhabitants of Hainan island. They would have crossed over from the Mainland approximately 3000 years ago. They are thought to belong to the Bai Yue (Hundred Yue), a formerly large complex of ethnic groups that lived in the south of China before the invasion by the “First” Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, in the third century BC.

After the Qin, the Nan Yue, a regional kingdom of the south, took control of Hainan until Emperor Han Wudi of the Han dynasty took it in 111 BC. Since then, Hainan has mostly remained under the control of the subsequent dynasties. Ethnic Chinese began to move to the island around this time. Around the 18th century, the Miao people settled on the island and today they number around 60,000.

Through the history of China, Hainan has been looked upon as one of the worst places to find oneself. Many political leaders were exiled to Hainan for one reason or another and none had much nice to say about it. In fact, Chinese records indicate only 18 tourists came to Hainan through the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties together. That’s approximately 700 years!

In 1988, Hainan was split up from neighboring Guangdong province and given the privilege of becoming one of Chinas many autonomous regions. Since then it has focused hard on attracting tourists with its white sand beaches, 5 star hotels and a growing offering of adventure travel opportunities.

The previous perceptions of Hainan would seem to have been completely replaced by tourist campaigns calling it the “Hawaii of the East”. Throngs of tourists throughout the winter months now stream into the island bringing a sense of fun and relaxation with them, so join in and take a vacation from your travels.



Hainan's new found prosperity does'nt only derive from it's beaches.
